Australian Labradoodle and Allergies: Facts, not myths
There are many misunderstandings around the concept of an "allergic dog". We often hear that there are breeds that are 100% allergic-free. As a professional breeder, I must be honest with you: there is no dog that is completely free of allergens. However, there are breeds that, thanks to their specificity, allow allergy sufferers to live comfortably under one roof. The Australian Labradoodle is the absolute leader in this respect.
Why does this breed help allergy sufferers?
Most people with allergies react not to the fur itself, but to proteins found in the dog's epidermis, saliva and urine. Traditionally shedding dogs spread these proteins throughout the house in their shed hair.
In the case of a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle, the situation is different:
- No shedding: Thanks to the specific, single-layer structure of the coat (fleece or wool), dead hair does not fall out on carpets and furniture. It stays in the hair coat until we brush it out.
- Minimum amount of epidermis: This breed produces significantly less shedding than most other breeds.
- Cleanliness of the environment: The lack of flying fur means a drastic reduction in the circulation of allergens in the air that household members breathe.
Not every "Doodle" is safe
This is the moment when I must emphasize the importance of the originality of the breed. Random crossbreeds (so-called F1, i.e. Labrador x Poodle) often retain the Labrador's undercoat. Such dogs shed, and their effect on an allergy sufferer may be the same as in the case of an ordinary mutt. Only multigenerational lines managed by ALFA-Europe have a genetically stabilized coat type that is friendly to sensitive people.
My safety procedure for families with allergies
I realize that buying a dog is a responsibility for several years. I don't want any puppy to have to go back to breeding because of the owner's sudden asthma attack. That's why we use proven steps:
- Visit to the farm (Contact test): I invite my family to my house. We spend time in a closed room with adult dogs. This is the best live test.
- Smell test: In some cases, I give the family a blanket or a piece of cloth with the scent of a specific dog so that they can check the body's reaction in the comfort of their home.
- Choosing the right type of robe: For people with very severe allergies, I usually recommend a Wool type garment, which is the most compact and least permeable to the epidermis.
Hygiene matters
Even with a hypoallergenic dog, an allergy sufferer should remember a few rules:
- Bathe and groom your dog regularly (preferably done by someone who doesn't have allergies).
- Systematic combing to remove dead hair in a controlled manner.
- Keeping the air humid at home.
